O, the joy of becoming a parent for the first time! It brings forth emotions that the parents never knew existed before. They have heard about it from their parents and from others speaking about their experiences. But to experience this awesome phenomenon of bringing something so precious as a newborn into the world and having the responsibility of overseeing its care over the course of the next 18 years is something for which that the hearing of another’s experience cannot prepare us.
When they are born, we give our names to the newborn. The passing of a family name has great significance as it is a sign that the family will continue to exist and thrive for another generation or for generations to come. As the newborn becomes a precocious toddler, then an identity-seeking adolescent, and finally a young adult who is ready to take on the world, we assist them by facilitating the process of development and helping them to navigate through the challenges of life. Once they have left home to begin their own life’s journey, regardless of where they may go and what they may encounter, there is one thing still remains true…they carry the family name and bear a resemblance to all that comes along with it.
Now, imagine having this responsibility for hundreds of millions of people each day! People are becoming newborn Christians daily and, in doing so, they have been adopted into the family of God. The life of Jesus is now flowing through their veins and they are sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30). Upon receiving Christ as their Lord and Savior, God places His name upon them, and as they continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus, they will begin to bear a resemblance to others who have been called by God’s name as well (2 Pet. 3:18; Deut. 28:9,10).
So how does God know my name? He knows my name because as His child, I am called by the name of the Lord God…for He has laid claim on me and has taken me as His own (Deut. 28:9-10; Ps. 27:10). As my Father, He fulfills His responsibility to me by ensuring that I have everything I need in order to represent His name as I daily navigate through the world. So when He calls to me, I answer because I belong to Him…what about you?…#thinkonthesethings
