  1. Hi, Sean.
What a tough topic. I often wonder how many of us Christians have a discipline of befriending even one young person–being there, listening, being interested and even safe–should he or she have something difficult going on. I wonder what would happen if we began showing hospitality to these strangers–though I haven’t a clue how you would do that where you are.

Even though I was one of the pastor’s kids, in a Christian church and identified totally as a Christian, I didn’t feel I had a safe adult with whom I could talk about difficult things in my life. The attitude seemed to be that if you don’t fit the good girl (or good boy) expectations, we need to pray over you and make sure you do things the way we do them.

I don’t have a solution, yet I know that hospitality to strangers of any age belongs at the top of our list when it comes to outreach and inreach.

    Thanks for the thoughtful post.

    • Hi Elouise…

Yes it’s something that has been on my mind for awhile now. I see how things have changed so drastically from the time I was younger. My background is somewhat similar to yours. Who do you turn to when you’re expected to live a certain way and then you fall short of that expectation. These young people are under so much pressure to do and become more and they are not prepared to handle it. Thanks for your response!

      • Well said, Sean! It’s sad how easy it is to make ‘them’ the problem. I pray you’ll find small but encouraging ways to engage young people with whom you have contact. Especially those who hang around the edges and don’t seem to know what to do next or even how to have a relationship with another person.

      • Thanks for the encouragement, Elouise! I pray so too!
