The Importance of Words

Understanding the power of spoken words requires a demonstration of the use of Godly wisdom when we are speaking to others.

“If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth…” (Num. 30:2).

Words are important! Once words are uttered from our lips, we cannot take them back. They are forever released into eternity. They are powerful and have the ability to unleash both good and evil upon us. Therefore, we must be mindful and choose the words we use both carefully and wisely.

When we make vows to God, we are expected to stand by the words which we have uttered. We are held accountable for what we have spoken. In like manner when God makes a promise to us, we hold Him to His promise and wait in great expectancy for the spoken word to come to pass. If we are in a covenant relationship with God, then why should He not have the same expectancy of us?

In consideration of this, God know all things and knows that we sometimes we offer vows based upon our emotions at present and that we are unable to fulfill those vows. We must learn to repent for making those vows and ask forgiveness for our momentary lapse in good judgment. We, then, should also take a lesson away from the life of Jephthah in the Book of Judges 11:30, 31. It is definitely worth the consideration.
