“And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice…” (Deut. 4:12).
Why is there such an emphasis on externalities? True beauty is found beneath the surface and in order to discover it, we must be willing to invest some time into the object which has captured our attention. In like manner, over time, humanity has attempted to construct images of its corresponding deities based upon what it feels the deity should look like. Oftentimes, the image is a mere reflection of its creator and bears no resemblance to the True Deity.
In this situation, the emphasis has been shifted from what should have been main point of focus (the teachings of the deity) to attempting to humanize the deity. The point being…we only want to believe in what we can see without realizing that if you can see it, then there is no need to believe in it. It does not take much effort to believe in something that you can see. Conversely, it takes much more effort to believe in something or Someone you cannot see.
