What Else Are We Supposed To Do?

The truth can only be found by seeking God...

“For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord; and how much more after my death?…For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands…” (Deut. 31:27, 29).

We are all looking for the next best thing in life because we are looking for a change from the everyday routine. We desire a break from the mundane activities of life which consume us daily. We feel as though there has to be a greater purpose for it all because if not, we have invested a lot of our time engaging into these activities. What else are we supposed to do?

Simply put, some of these things do serve a greater, unseen purpose that has been ordained by God to prepare us for fulfilling His plan for our lives. Others serve a greater, unseen purpose that has been allowed by God to prepare us for fulfilling His plan for our lives. The main thing is being able to discern the difference between the two. If we cannot, we will continue to have both in our lives, when God desires for us to walk out the steps in life that have been ordered by Him and His Word.

If we do not continuously submit and surrender our lives to the will and wisdom of God, we will experience some unnecessary hardships in life. However, because of our propensity to want to do some things our own way, life will never be so simple. Some of our old habits will continue to plague us throughout life until we have surrendered them to God completely. The change has to come from our willingness to lay down our desires and take on God’s desires instead. Until we do this, we will continue to engage in the same mundane activities of life.

The amazing thing about it all is that God knows this because He understands the nature of our human frailty. This is why He keeps extending His grace and mercy. He knows that there are some things about us that will never change. He understands that there will be some things that we will continue to struggle with in life. He understands that there are going to be times wherein we experience success and, conversely, there will be times when we will fail. This is why He has made provision for us to be able to return to Him through the work of Jesus on the Cross for restoration whenever we miss the mark.

The reality we must face is that some things will never change, and God is well aware of this. However it is not an excuse, nor permission to continue to remain in this sinful cycle. There must be some acknowledgement on our part, in addition to, some effort to put these behaviors behind us in order to move forward in our relationship with God and fulfilling His purpose for our lives.

So what else are supposed to do? We must continue join the Apostle Paul when he says,

“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus…” (Phil. 3:12-14).
