Health And Wellness Series: What Is Health And Wellness?

Are you living your best life?

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth…” (3 Jn. 2).

Last week, we began an introductory discussion about health and wellness and what it means in relation to Kingdom Living. This week, we will be taking the discussion a little further by introducing the meaning of the two terms health and wellness. 

Health is the condition of being sound in body, mind or spirit.

Merriam-Webster defines the term health as “the condition of being sound in body, mind or spirit”. It speaks to a holistic look at the human composition. Every aspect of a person’s life is taken into consideration. Each part of a person’s being directly influences what happens to the other parts. They are inseparable. For example, if someone’s mind is in distress, it will have an impact on the individual’s body. Or if the same individual’s spirit is discouraged, it will manifest itself through the person’s thoughts and actions.

Wellness is the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.

Merriam-Webster goes on to define wellness as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal“. In this frame of reference, we think of quality in terms of the degree of excellence and the distinguishing attribute when referring to a person’s health. It is the key to determining whether a person is in an overall good state of well being based upon that person’s awareness of his condition(s) and decision to improve the condition(s).

Health and wellness refers to the ability to make positive, life-changing decisions based upon our personal knowledge and understanding of our current condition.

When brought together, the terms health and wellness basically refer to the ability to make positive, life-changing decisions based upon our personal knowledge and understanding of our current condition. This would require us to take an introspective look  and be willing to be completely honest with ourselves. However, things do not end there. Then, we must decide to act upon the things we have learned about ourselves, whether good or bad. This may not be as simple as it appears on the surface. It requires much commitment to the process as a whole for it to be beneficial.

Next week, we will begin an introductory discussion on the seven dimensions of wellness. Next week’s discussion will be followed up with weekly discussions on each dimension individually.
